Terra Branford
Espers, a race of magical beings, were created as weapons during the War of the Magi. In Final Fantasy VI, Terra was the child of an Esper and a Human. Though her appearance was human, she was gifted with magic and the ability to transform into an Esper.
At the end of the game, her Esper form was apparently separated from her Human form... but now, for whatever reason, the Esper has reappeared in the world. Reappared high above the Veldt, to be specific. And though flight was on her roster of abilities, she found herself unable to counter gravity and soon came to earth near...

Gau
Gau grew up on the Veldt, learning the ways of the monsters that inhabit it. He can use his Rages to mimic their abilities, though he has yet to develop a sense of which Rage is appropriate for any given situation. Following the events of Final Fantasy VI, he returned to the Veldt and has made a comfortable living off the food thrown to him by tourists.

So, what does a world-travelling thrill-seeker do when he wants to settle down? Start a tourism company! He has been transporting vacation groups all over the world in the past few months, and discovering that tourism isn't really his ideal job. His ideal job, in fact, is no job, but he has his world tours booked through the next two years. It probably wouldn't take much of an excuse for him to drop everything, though.

Ayla
A cavewoman from a different time... heck, she's even from a different game. No one is sure what Ayla, a Chrono Trigger character, is doing in the world of Final Fantasy VI. All that is known is that she has taken a liking to Gau. The impact of an Esper falling at terminal velocity has reduced her vocabulary to one word, and it's more of a grunt than a word. Despite brain damage, she continues to pursue Gau's affections. She really ought to be dating within her own sprite size.
